The Case of the Spiraling Stripes: A Helical Knitting Adventure 2026

Class Time: Friday, April 24, 2026, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Location: St. Louis Community College - Meramec Campus, 11333 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, MO 63122. Check in at Registration 15 minutes prior to class starting at PE Building for location.

In this class, you will step into the role of a fiber sleuth and uncover the elegant secret of two-color, one-row helical knitting while creating a simple yet striking cowl. Helical stripes spiral seamlessly around your work, leaving no trace of a jog, ladder, or suspicious color shift—a technique so clean even Sherlock himself would approve.

This clever method is indispensable for larger circular projects that require alternating skeins (such as sweaters), and it’s one I rely on in nearly every sweater I knit. By the end of class, you’ll possess a polished technique worthy of any knitting detective’s toolkit.

Skill Prerequisite: Cast On, Knit, Purl, Bind Off, read a basic knit pattern

Additional Supplies Needed

• Pattern (see homework)
• DK weight yarn of your choice - 2 colors that have enough contrast that you can see your stripes
• Circular needles of an appropriate size to knit in the round. Magic loop can be done, but is not recommended for your first helical knit.  
• 3 stitch markers - one unique to mark start of round, 2 that are similar to mark the beginning/end of your helical stripes
• Pen/Pencil
• Notebook

Homework: 

Purchase the Base Doodle Pattern of your choice (Infinity Cowl, Standard Cowl, or Reversible Cowl are recommended).

For the Infinity Cowl and Reversible Cowl, cast on per pattern instructions and knit your first round with MC.

For the Standard Cowl (or other pattern beginning with ribbing), CO and knit the ribbing + 1 round of knit in your MC.
