Instructor: Mariya Gerhardt

In this beginner-friendly workshop, we will investigate the enchanting process of nuno felting, uncovering how wool, silk, water, and motion conspire to create a fabric both delicate and enduring. Students will craft a double-sided, leaf-inspired scarf, each side revealing a different design, two clues to the same beautiful textile mystery.

Using fine merino wool fiber, silk fabric, viscose fiber, and decorative yarns, we will build rich textures and layered visual effects. Throughout our inquiry, students will learn how to:

• Combine wool roving with silk fabric using nuno felting, bonding loose fibers to sheer cloth
• Employ wet-felting techniques; hot water, soap, and gentle agitation, to form a seamless, durable textile
• Explore lamination, embedding decorative yarns between wool and silk to achieve unique surface textures
• Design a reversible scarf with striking character and visual depth on both sides

“Nuno,” the Japanese word for cloth, lends its name to this versatile technique, prized for its airy lightness and surprising strength. Wet felting itself is among the most ancient textile arts—simple, sustainable, and magical to witness as it unfolds.

By day’s end, each student will leave with a singular, double-sided scarf and a solid foundation in the principles and creative possibilities of nuno felting.
