Sewing for Fiber Artists

Class Time: Saturday, April 26, 2025 1 - 4 PM

Location: St. Louis Community College - Meramec Campus, 11333 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, MO 63122. Check in at Registration 15 minutes prior to class starting at PE Building for location.

Instructor: Julie Benac

Pull that sewing machine out of the closet and learn fun, unique ways to use your handspun yarns in all sorts of clothing and home projects. We’ll learn different ways to use that sewing machine, such as free-motion work, as well as using specialty presser feet. We'll learn about handspun yarns that lend themselves to loop closures, knot buttons, and even piping!

Did you know you can create fabric with your handspun art yarn without weaving or knitting? We’ll also explore various methods of seaming handwoven fabrics and other methods unique to sewing handwoven items. By the end of class, students will have a book of samples for later reference.

Join in this exciting workshop and learn to enhance your (already beautiful!) fiber art with your sewing machine!  

Skill Prerequisite: Basic Machine Sewing, familiarity with your machine

Ages: 14+

Supplies: Included in Class Cost:

• Yarn
• Fabric samples
• Embroidery hoop
• Silk bias strips

Additional Supplies Needed: 

• Sewing Machine
• Thread in neutral color, such as white, black, brown, etc.

• The class minimum is 5 students. If we are unable to fill these spots, we will cancel the class and provide a full refund.
