Class Time: Saturday, April 25, 2026, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: St. Louis Community College - Meramec Campus, 11333 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, MO 63122. Check in at Registration 15 minutes prior to class starting at PE Building for location.

In the world of knitted garments, few skills are as quietly powerful or as often mishandled as the art of picking up stitches. A crooked buttonband or a wobbly collar stands out like a suspicious footprint at a crime scene, while a smooth, even edge blends seamlessly into the fabric, revealing the work of a true master.

Join us as we investigate the science and subtlety behind perfectly picked up stitches. Under expert guidance, you’ll learn:
- How to pick up stitches evenly and elegantly along any edge
- The secrets behind flawless buttonbands, collars, and sleeve openings
- How to free yourself from cryptic pattern instructions through clear, trustworthy methods
- Tips and tricks that guarantee consistency, every single time

By the end of this session, you’ll possess the confidence and precision of a seasoned detective, ready to tackle any edge with skill worthy of Baker Street.

Skill Prerequisite:  

• Students must know how to knit and purl

Ages: High School, Adult

Supplies Included in Class Cost: None.

Additional Supplies Needed

• US 8 (5mm) knitting needles
• Worsted weight yarn

Homework: 

• Cast on 28 stitches using the US 8 (5mm) knitting needle and worsted weight yarn.
• Row 1: knit
• Row 2: purl
• Repeat rows 1 & 2 for 18 total rows.
• Row 19: Bind off 5 stitches, knit to end
• Row 20: purl
• Row 21: Bind off 3, knit to end
• Row 22: purl
• Row 23: Bind off 3, knit to end
• Row 24: purl
• Row 25: Bind off 2, knit to end.
• Row 26: purl
• Row 27: k1, ssk, knit to end.
• Row 28: purl
• Row 29-32: repeat rows 27 and 28 two times.
• Row 33: knit
• Row 34: purl
• Row 35: knit
• Row 36: purl
• Bind off.
