Continental Knitting: A Most Curious Change of Method 2026

Class Time: Saturday, April 25, 2026, 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM

Location: St. Louis Community College - Meramec Campus, 11333 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, MO 63122. Check in at Registration 15 minutes prior to class starting at PE Building for location.

Have you long practiced the English or “throwing” style of knitting, deftly swinging the yarn with your right hand, yet found yourself intrigued by whispers of the Continental method? Then, dear knitter, this class will be your gateway into a new and efficient technique, one that might even impress the great detective himself.

In Continental knitting, the yarn is held in the left hand, and the stitches are swiftly and neatly plucked through one another. Many a seasoned knitter has proclaimed this method to be faster and gentler on the shoulders, wrists, and neck, a matter worthy of empirical investigation!

Under careful guidance, you will explore the mechanics of Continental knitting, practice the essential motions, and gain confidence in this elegant alternative technique. Bring your curiosity and willingness to retrain your hands.

Skill Prerequisite:  Be proficient in basic knitting skills (casting on, knitting, purling)

Ages: High School, Adult

Supplies Included in Class Cost: None.

Additional Supplies Needed

• US 8(5mm) knitting needles
• 2 colors of worsted weight yarn

• The class minimum is 6 students. If we are unable to fill these spots, we will cancel the class and provide a full refund.
