Step into Baker Street, by way of the loom, and discover what clues your creativity has been leaving behind all along. In this delightfully unconventional class, we’ll channel a bit of Sherlock Holmes’ keen observation and fearless curiosity as we investigate color, texture, and technique on a simple, easy-to-use two-harness floor loom.

Like Holmes assembling meaning from the smallest details, you’ll learn the basic skills of freestyle weaving and then follow your own creative deductions. This class emphasizes exploration over perfection: mixing fibers, testing textures, and allowing happy accidents to reveal unexpected truths. Along the way, a few straightforward weaving techniques will be demonstrated, but the real mystery you’ll solve is how to make the cloth unmistakably yours.

All materials are provided, and there’s no homework, this is strictly an in-the-moment investigation. However, should you wish to bring a personal “artifact” to weave into your piece, you are warmly encouraged to do so. Past evidence has included specialty papers, stray earrings and pendants, washed fleece or locks, handspun yarn, dyed or undyed fiber, and small but precious leftovers too special to discard. These found objects often become the most intriguing clues in the final fabric.

You’ll leave with a finished woven piece of art and, quite possibly, a new appreciation for creative imperfection. No prior weaving experience is required, seasoned weavers and complete novices alike are welcome. Freestyle weaving is accessible to everyone who’s willing to experiment, observe, and follow a hunch.

Open to students ages 10 and up. Participants must be tall enough to reach the floor pedals, able to sit comfortably on a lightly padded bench, and ready to focus for the duration of class.

After all, as Holmes himself might say: “The game is afoot” and so is the loom.
